Alabama’s underground utility protection laws require all excavators to call 811 before digging. This article covers the key legal requirements and best practices for compliance on utility boring projects in Alabama.

Alabama Underground Facilities Damage Prevention Act

Alabama’s Underground Utilities Damage Prevention Law (Alabama Code Title 37, Chapter 15) requires anyone planning to excavate to notify the Alabama Underground Utilities Notification Center (AUUNC) — accessible via 811 — at least 3 business days before excavating. Failure to comply can result in fines and liability for any utility damage.

Why 811 Alone May Not Be Enough

While 811 locates are required, they only cover utilities registered with the 811 system. Private utilities, abandoned lines, and older infrastructure may not be marked. That’s why Boring Bros LLC recommends supplementing 811 locates with GPR utility scanning on every project.
